Usaf Evaluating Helicopter Ifr Aids

Recent advances in helicopter control, display and stability augmentation systems are being evaluated by USAF to determine whether they can materially improve pilots’ instrument flight capabilities at reasonable cost. Helicopter pilots fly 50% fewer instrument hours than fixed-wing pilots, according to an April, 1971, report of the USAF Instrument Pilot Instructor School.

Tilt-rotor Aircraft Nears Final Design

Mountain View, Calif.—Effort to build two U. S. tilt-rotor research aircraft is proceeding toward a final design review this fall in a program marked by extensive reliance on advanced simulation techniques throughout all phases. The program has a first-flight goal of July, 1976, but officials of the joint National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Army effort are placing more emphasis on economy, simplicity and safety than on the timetable.

No 'shopping List’ in German Offset Plan

Geneva—Offset agreement totaling $2.2 billion signed by West Germany and the U. S. requires Bonn to procure more than $1 billion in U. S. military hardware during the two-year period ending June 30, 1975. The agreement also set the stage for further intensive talks with other North Atlantic Treaty Organization members aimed at gaining more contributions from Europe to offset balance-of-payment costs sustained by the U. S. in stationing forces in Europe.

Sperry Rand Corp. reports record revenues and net income for its fiscal year ended Mar. 31. Net income was $112.5 million, or $3.27 a share, on revenues of $2.61 billion, compared with net income of $90 million, or $2.62 a share, on revenues of $2.22 billion for the year ended Mar. 31, 1973.
