Reading Show Upsets Gloomy Forecasts

Reading, Pa.—Brisk business and higher consumer interest were found by exhibitors at the 25th Reading Show despite earlier predictions of a cautious clientele wary of fuel prices and availability this fall. Every exhibitor polled by AVIATION WEEK & SPACE TECHNOLOGY during the early stages of the four-day event said the appearance of legitimate prospects for new aircraft, avionics and maintenance services exceeded earlier expectations.

Spain Banks on U. S. Sea Control Ship

Madrid—Spanish navy intends to begin construction of a sea control ship (SCS) next year if Congress approves the U. S. Navy’s request for funding for development of a similar ship. Spanish navy is relying on the SCS concept and a new generation of U. S.-developed vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) aircraft to provide the Spanish fleet with a fixed-wing air arm before the end of this decade.

Contract Awarded for Shuttle Microwave Beam Landing Aid

Melville, N. Y.—Airborne avionics portion of a microwave scanning beam landing system for the space shuttle orbiter vehicle (AW&ST June 3, p. 12) will be built by AIL Div. of Cutler-Hammer under a letter contract awarded by Rockwell International, space shuttle prime contractor.

With many of his former White House aides trooping off to federal prisons for felonies committed on his behalf, another sizable group facing indictments and proceedings to impeach him already well under way in the House, President Nixon desperately needs some dramatic foreign triumph—real or imagined—to try to rescue his slipping grip on the presidency.
