Westland Aims at Civil Helicopter Market

Yeovil, England—Westland Helicopters, Ltd., already firmly established in the military market with close ties to the U. S. and France, is investing several million dollars in developing a complementary line of civil helicopters. Basil D. Blackwell, managing director, said the civil export drive will center on a version of the Westland/Aerospatiale WG.13 Lynx, now in production for British and French forces, and the Gazelle, primarily an Aerospatiale design.

90% of Short’s Effort Devoted to Exports

Belfast, Northern Ireland—Short Brothers & Harland, a high technology airframe and missile manufacturer operating in the midst of an undeclared civil war, last year showed a profit of $4.3 million on revenues of $66 million. But this year, the company expects that writeoffs of research and development costs of its new turboprop transport will allow it only to break even.
