Washington—Defense Dept.'s Fiscal 1976 budget request to Congress will seek approval for 90 USAF/McDonnell Douglas F-15 fighters at a flyaway cost of $12.5 million each. This amount does not include provision for funds to settle prior year claims for which the government may be liable in cost overruns on the air-superiority fighter.

Telescope Equipment for Shuttle Tested

Astronomical telescope and ultraviolet stellar spectrometer equipment to be considered as a space shuttle payload are being tested in a near-space environment using a large balloon launch system. The balloon-borne ultraviolet stellar spectrometer (BUSS) program, being carried out under the direction of National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Johnson Space Center, Houston, is evaluating state-of-the-art detector and tracking performance, flexibility of attaching instrumentation to a general-purpose telescope platform and developing realtime man-in-the-loop data acquisition, evaluation and associated ground operations.

Paris—Aerospatiale’s Tactical Missiles Div. is developing further its MM38 Exocet anti-ship missile to accommodate a broader spectrum of requirements in both range and launch-platforms. Development of the original ship-launched, surface-to-surface version of the missile is now essentially complete, including operational trials by the French, British and German navies.

Washington—Defense Dept. is evaluating a plan for accelerating its Navstar global positioning system that could advance deployment of an operational system by 18 months to early 1980, providing that approval for an operational system is given by early 1978 (AW&ST July 15, p. 69).

Lima—Peruvian military buildup and the emergence of a large new secret military complex within striking distance of Chile are sparking apprehensions among neighbors to the north and south. The new base, closed to U. S. and other Western observers but open to Soviet technicians and advisers, lies roughly midway between the cities of Arequipa and Tacna near the Chilean border.
