Sikorsky Pushing New Civil Helicopter

Sikorsky Aircraft this week unveiled its 12-passenger twin-engine S-76 mockup as its first clean-sheet-of-paper commercial helicopter project and long stride toward assembly of a civil-market family. Final authorization early in January to begin formal development followed a year of design studies and market surveys that considered the alternatives of licensing or joint development of a new aircraft or modification of a military helicopter.

Performance, Cost Guided Air Force Selection of F-16

Washington—Better performance in flight tests and less cost combined to generate USAF’s selection of the General Dynamics YF-16 lightweight fighter as the F-16 air combat fighter over its competitor, the Northrop YF-17. The Air Force selected the YF-16 because it outperformed its competitor and is about 8% cheaper than the Northrop entry, according to Lt. Gen. William J. Evans, Air Force deputy chief of staff for research and development.
