Ntsb Analyzes Pan Am Freighter Crash

At 0939 EST, Nov. 3, 1973, Pan American World Airways, Inc., Clipper Flight 160, a Boeing 707-321C (N458PA), crashed at Logan International Airport, Boston, Mass. The aircraft was destroyed and its three crewmembers were killed. About 30 min. after Clipper 160, a cargo flight, departed John F. Kennedy Airport, New York, the flightcrew reported smoke in the cockpit.

North Central Presses New Route Awards

New York—North Central Airlines wants to be one of the first to test avowals before Congress by the Civil Aeronautics Board that it will take a more liberal stance toward hearing applications for new route awards. North Central President Bernard Sweet predicted a year ago that the Board would loosen the strings on route cases, and it has filed or plans to refile either new or similar applications to a batch of its priority targets for expansion, coincident with the congressional testimony (AW&ST Feb. 24, p. 25).

Israel Shifts Toward Long-range Fleet

Tel Aviv—Israeli navy is revising its strategy from coastal protection into a long-range fleet that can be self-maintained far from its home bases. Senior officers here stressed that the primary mission remains protection of the Israeli coast and its centers of population and industry, but that the concept of defense has expanded to include “an aggressive seekout of the enemy at his bases and his coasts.”
