Ntsb Analyzes Data in Pan Am Crash

Operation of the flight. The flight was routine until just before 0904, when the crew advised Pan American operations at JFK that smoke had accumulated in the lower 41 and that they were turning back to Boston or New York. From 0904 until 5 min. before the crash, several conversations regarding smoke in the aircraft were recorded by the CVR.

Pan Am Seeks Stability with New, Slimmer Look

New York—Slimming down Pan American World Airways is complete as far as internal planning and decisions go, and its strategy of a smaller, seat-oriented airline has been launched in a treacherous 1975 economic sea. Government approvals are still needed for part of the shrinking of the airline—the Pacific/Caribbean route swap with American Airlines and additional suspensions in the Caribbean.

Sundstrand Challenged in Gpws Sweeps

Sundstrand Data Control is being challenged by Collins Radio group of Rockwell International for first place in the race for airline orders for ground proximity warning systems (GPWS), with each reporting close to 1,200 systems sold. Sundstrand, a GPWS pioneer, recently was selected by Eastern Air Lines, one of the last of the major carriers to pick a supplier.

Usaf, Navy Push Demonstrator Engine

Washington—Air Force has issued a proposal request for a joint technology demonstrator engine (JTDE), which it and the Navy will use to develop advanced technology engines for future aircraft from subsonic transports to Mach 4-plus fighters (AW&ST Feb. 24, p. 11).

New Unit to Test Shuttle Thermal Guard

Moffett Field, Calif.—Major new high-temperature aerodynamic test facility will begin operation here in April to support the design of the thermal protection system (TPS) for the U.S. space shuttle orbiter. The new unit is a 60-mw. arc-heated facility that will be used to test both types shuttle heat shield material—the LTV Aerospace Corp. reinforced carbon-carbon (RCC) system designated for the nose cap and wing leading edge, and the Lockheed Missiles & Space Co. silica tile reusable surface insulation (RSI) to be employed on the remainder of the vehicle.

Communications, Atc Cited in Midair Collision

Midair collision of an Iberia Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 and a Spantax Convair 990-30A near Nantes, France, Mar. 5, 1973, resulted from a complex sequence of events dominated by poor communications, inadequate radio and radar facilities and confused air traffic control procedures, a French commission of inquiry has decided.
