Military Navaid Has Special Civil Uses

Denver—Small military Tacan terminals are demonstrating their ability to meet specialized civil needs where conventional civil navaids cannot operate satisfactorily because of difficult terrain, or for a variety other reasons. The first full-time civil application in the U. S. is a recent installation at Aspen, Colo., where an AN/TRN-26 mini-Tacan has had a notable impact on the operations and profits, of Aspen Airways, whose principal market is flying skiers between Denver and Aspen.

Helicopters, Streetcars Sharing Facility

Philadelphia—Advanced technology streetcars are starting to move down a high-bayfactory assembly line in a former locomotive plant here that also houses Boeing Vertol Co. CH-47 Chinook helicopter assembly. Light rail car manufacture or research and development is projected as 40% of Vertol’s business in 1976, but unprecedented inflation on top of the usual lumps of breaking into a new business mean that surface transport will contribute nowhere near that percentage in profitability.

Fuel Costs Seen Shaping Future Designs

San Francisco—Fuel prices will become a major factor in the future designs of engines, wings, avionics and the air traffic control system, an aerospace official said here. The U.S. air transportation system was not designed for minimum fuel usage, but for competitive superiority based on inexpensive petroleum-based fuel, said John E. Steiner, vice president-technology and new program development, Boeing Commercial Airplane Co.
