At 0743 on Mar. 31, 1975, Western Air Lines, Inc., Flight 470, overran the departure end of Runway 25 at the Natrona County International Airport, Casper, Wyo. The landing was made following a nonprecision approach on a snow-covered runway, with a following wind, and during reduced visibility.

New Soil Tests Add to Martian ‘puzzle’

Pasadena, Calif.—No signs of organic compounds have been detected at two initial temperature cycles by the Viking 2 lander gas chromatograph experiment on a Martian soil sample that previously had been protected by a rock. The findings failed to corroborate the “weak but positive” readings transmitted earlier to Viking scientists here at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from two of the lander’s biology instruments, placing in limbo any immediate conclusions as to whether life exists in the Utopia region of Mars.
