There was no evidence of any malfunction of the aircraft or its flight control system, wheels, brakes, tires or propulsion systems before it encountered the sea gulls. The aircraft had been maintained in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration-approved procedures, was certified properly and was equipped properly for the flight.

Houston—Final design details for the new space suits being developed for the space shuttle program by Hamilton Standard and ILC Industries will be adopted by January when the critical design review for the system will be held. Preliminary design review for the new suits was completed here in June.

Self-healing Computer in Development

Los Angeles—Air Force is starting development of a flight model of a self-healing spaceborne computer that can detect, isolate and bypass its own faults and provide undegraded operation in space environments for five years. The fault-tolerant computer figures prominently in Air Force hopes of giving future spacecraft greater guidance, navigation and attitude control autonomy, thereby relieving their dependence on dedicated ground-based computers.

Short-term Initiatives Readied By Nato

Washington—Short-term initiatives aimed at shoring up the conventional force capability of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization have been forwarded to European capitals and are expected to be approved by the alliance in time for a ministerial meeting in December, according to Defense Secretary Harold Brown.
