Soviet Defense Spending Continues to Exceed U. 5.

Washington—Dollar cost comparisons between the Soviet Union and the U. S. in defense activities show the Soviets exceeded the U. S. by about 40% in 1977, according to the Central Intelligence Agency. In a recent research paper that compared U. S. and Soviet defense spending activities from 1967 to 1977, the CIA said that over the 11-year period the Soviet Union had an average of about 3% compound growth each year, while U. S. outlays in constant dollars declined steadily from a Vietnam war peak in 1968 through 1976.

Italy Weighs New Attack/fighter Needs

Turin —Italian air force and aeronautical industry are studying several new close air support and fighter aircraft programs to replace combat aircraft currently in use. The attack aircraft probably will be developed and produced domestically, but national budgetary limitations will not permit the Italian industry to develop a new fighter/interceptor aircraft on its own (AW&ST Jan. 16, p. 16).
