Germans Develop Multimission Satellite

Washington—Space shuttle pallet satellite that could be an early competitor to the U. S. multimission spacecraft is under development in Germany by Messerschmitt-BoelkowBlohm. The design is centered on a modular structure that would bridge the top of the shuttle cargo bay, allowing room for placement of instrumentation on the top and bottom of the pallet satellite or the stowage of a large amount of shuttle cargo on the shuttle’s floor under the spacecraft.

During their years, privately, they were quite clear that the Soviet Union, rather than stopping at parity, was proceeding to achieve strategic nuclear superiority.
