Untangling Spares Pricing

Congressional complaints and a draft report from the Defense Dept.’s inspector general about pricing for spares have criticized military procurement managers for paying far more than necessary for such hardware. By implication, the report and the furor in Congress have also charged that aerospace companies are habitually gouging the government on spares pricing.

Landsat Failures Spur Shuttle Plan for Repair

Washington—Multiple failures on the General Electric Landsat 4 thematic mapper spacecraft in polar orbit are forcing emergency launch of the backup Landsat D-prime satellite to maintain a U. S. civil remote-sensing capability. Landsat 4 malfunctions also have prompted planning for a space shuttle mission to retrieve and repair the satellite in space.
