Reagan’s Space Challenge

Space was an ambivalent subject in the first three years of the Reagan Administration. The new President was high on military space—specifics initially undefined—and supported the NASA space shuttle. Private enterprise in space was a hot item, and it led to an abortive effort to sell off government-funded civil weather and Earth resources satellites to commercial operators.

Tokyo—Japanese government last week issued Its Fiscal 1984 defense budget of $12.48 billion, about 6.5% more than the current year and only slightly less than the Japanese Defense Agency requested. It reflects 0.991% of Japan’s gross national product, just under the constitutional limit of 1 % on defense spending.
