Washington—Many of the smaller passenger airlines operating large jet aircraft reported improved financial results in the fourth quarter and full year of 1983. Nine of a group of 14 carriers, whose annual revenues are less than $1 billion, had net profits for the year, and 11 reported operating profits.

Alq-161 Flight Tests Set This Summer

Washington—Flight tests of the first production AN/ALQ-161 defensive avionics system for the USAF/Rockwell B-1B are to begin this summer on a Rockwell B-1A that has served as an avionics testbed. Developed by Eaton’s AIL Div., the ALQ-161 is expected to cost around $20 million per shipset, corresponding to roughly 10% of the total cost of the new bomber.

Michelin Testing Radial Tires on Aircraft

New York—Michelin Tire Corp. is test flying radial tires on commercial aircraft and has committed a line of radial aircraft tires to production. The Michelin Air X radial tires are aimed at lowering overall aircraft operating costs by reducing tire weight 20-30%, increasing tire life and improving safety margins over bias-ply tires in use today.

Smoking Ban Will Cover Commuter-class Aircraft

Washington—Tobacco smoking will be banned on U. S. commercial transports containing 30 or fewer seats, and cigar and pipe smoking will be banned on all domestic flights and on U. S. carriers in international service, according to an order outlined last week by the Civil Aeronautics Board.

President Reagan’s Fiscal 1985 budget includes a shift toward basic research, or so the budget proponents claim. The increase in funding is there, as basic research is defined by the Office of Management and Budget, and its subjective judgment of what belongs in basic research is as good as anybody’s.
