Where the Money Goes

Reaction to the Fiscal 1986 budget in the first days after its submission to Congress has centered on the question of how much. That question, in turn, mostly dwelt on the Defense budget and whether its real growth rate of about 6% was overdone in the face of a prospective deficit of $180 billion.

London—British Aerospace Corp. is seeking to head off a threatened split in the developing European Fighter Aircraft (EFA) program by offering to give France design leadership in both the airframe and engine segments in return for French agreement to an international development organization in which all member nations would be equal partners.

Cost Overruns, Delays Cited In Britain’s Military Programs

London—Cost of the British Aerospace Nimrod Mk. 3 airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft program will exceed approximately $1.3 billion and the aircraft will be at least four years late, a House of Commons Committee was told last week. The information came as several committees of the House of Commons looked into cost increases and delays in a number of aircraft programs.

Europeans Disagree on Size of New Aircraft

Paris—Jacques Mitterrand, president of France’s aerospace industry association, said recently that two “schools of thought” remain concerning the proposed European Fighter Aircraft (EFA). The head of GIFAS (Groupement des Industries Francaises Aeronautiques et Spatiales) said that the British envision the EFA as an aircraft weighing approximately 22,000-25,000 lb. with an engine thrust of about 23,000 lb.

Research Aims at Development Of Laser-Guided Electron Beam

Washington—Defense Dept, is conducting an advanced technology research program that could lead to development of a laserguided electron beam weapon loitering at ionospheric altitudes of 80-600 km. (49.68-372.6 mi.) that could successfully intercept and destroy Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles at ranges of more than 1,000 mi.

USAF Cancels Laser-Guided Bomb Effort

Washington—U. S. Air Force has decided to cancel further development and production of the Paveway 3 low-level, laser-guided bomb in the wake of severe funding cuts by Congress in the past two years. Paveway 3 is the latest in a series of bombs equipped with a laser seeker and controllable fins and wings that allow the weapon to be delivered with precision on a laser-illuminated ground target.
