NTSB Describes Wind Shear Procedures Used by Stapieton, United Airlines

Communications—There were no known difficulties with communications equipment. However, there was congestion on the local control frequency. Aerodrome Information—The Stapieton International Airport is owned and operated by the city and county of Denver, Colo. The airport, which has an elevation of 5,333 ft. and encompasses some 4,600 acres, is certificated under 14 CFR Part 139.

Goddard Space Flight Center, Md.—The first direct exploration of a comet carried out Sept. 11 by the U. S. International Cometary Explorer (ICE) satellite has shown that the thousands of comets roaming the solar system are likely to be far more complex and dynamic than Earthbased observation and analysis have indicated.

Fafnir Bearing Plans Aerospace Division Modernization Program

New Britain, Conn.—Fafnir Bearing Co.Textron has signed a letter of understanding with USAF San Antonio Air Logistics Command at Kelly AFB, Tex., aimed at modernizing its aerospace bearings division manufacturing activity. The agreement will be followed by a letter contract in late September authorizing Fafnir to proceed with a $2-million, Phase 2 USAF Technology Modernization program.
