Ruptured Solid Rocket Motor Caused Challenger Accident

Washington—The space shuttle Mission 51-L explosion Jan. 28 was triggered by a rupture in the vehicle's right Morton Thiokol solid rocket motor at a point where two segments of the booster are joined during preflight assembly at the Kennedy Space Center, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's interim accident review board believes.

Washington—Design of the space shuttle Morton Thiokol solid rocket motor implicated in the shuttle Challenger Mission 51-L accident Jan. 28 used conservative specification margins and proved technology to eliminate the possibility of failure of the motor case, its joints or the propellant itself.

Los Angeles—Voyager 2 project scientists are continuing to analyze data that have been returned from the Uranus encounter in an attempt to learn more about the planet's magnetosphere, atmosphere, rings and moons. Voyager 2 made its closest approach to Uranus Jan. 24 and returned large amounts of science data to Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
