Vandenberg Shuttle Complex Will Go Into Mothball Status

COCOA BEACH, FLA. The Air Force plans to mothball space shuttle launch facilities at Vandenberg AFB, Calif., next year and to rely on unmanned vehicles to put heavy military pay-loads into polar orbit from a new launch complex to be built at Vandenberg.

Pilot Retention Bonus Plan Meets Obstacles in Congress

WASHINGTON A joint Air Force/Navy aviator bonus pay program, aimed at stemming the exodus of experienced pilots from the military to the commercial sector, has received a lukewarm reception from Congress. The House Armed Services Committee recently recommended cutting by nearly a third the Air Force’s request for $54 million to begin the program in Fiscal 1989 and restricting bonus payments to specific, critical areas.

Air Force to Purchase Navy E-6 Aircraft for Joint Stars Program

WASHINGTON The Air Force plans to buy 21 Navy E-6 aircraft for its Joint Surveillance Target Attack System (Joint STARS) program and will have the Navy act as its agent to purchase the aircraft from Boeing. The Air Force aircraft, to be designated EC-18, will use the same airframe and CFM International CFM56-2A2 engines as the Navy E-6 Tacamo aircraft, but with the Joint STARS mission system.
