Nato Selects McDonnell Douglas Delta to Launch Communications Satellite

NATO has selected the McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Co. Delta 2 booster to launch its next-generation military communications satellite, following an unsuccessful European campaign to force NATO to allow Ariane to compete for the award.

U. S. Reviews Policy on Use of Chinese Launcher Following Export Requests

WASHINGTON The State Dept. has been asked to approve export licenses to ship U. S.built communications satellites to China for launch on the Long March rocket, prompting a major review of U. S. technology transfer policy. Asiasat, a British/Chinese consortium, asked for approval to launch the refurbished Westar 6 satellite on Long March in early 1990 in the first request, filed July 12.

Cosmonauts Plan Second Eva to Repair Science Instrument

WASHINGTON Soviet cosmonauts on the Mir space station will conduct a second extravehicular activity (EVA) to repair a British/Dutch science instrument following their failure to complete the repair on June 30. The Mir crewmen Vladimir Titov and Musa Manarov were last week unloading a new Progress tanker/transport docked to the station.

Nasa Plans to Seek $2.1-billion Space Station Funding in 1990

WASHINGTON NASA managers are planning to more than double the space station budget request next year to $2.1 billion, and to request another large increase to $2.9 billion in Fiscal 1991, despite the serious problems NASA has faced in getting smaller station budgets than these approved in the last two budget cycles.
