Deficit Woes Prompt Jordan to Postpone Tornado Purchase

WASHINGTON High financing costs and the need to reduce its government debt have driven Jordan to “postpone indefinitely” an $875-million order for eight Panavia Tornado interdiction-strike fighters. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was advised of Jordan’s decision in a Mar. 13 visit by King Hussein to London.

Soviets Lose Contact with Phobos 2 Spacecraft

PARIS/WASHINGTON Loss of communications with the Soviet Union’s Phobos 2 spacecraft may have prematurely ended the country’s ambitious Mars mission that was to have included a close encounter with the Martian moon Phobos. The communications problem on Mar. 27 forced a cancellation of the planned Apr. 9-10 encounter with Phobos, and the inability of controllers to reestablish contact by late last week raised the probability that control links with Phobos 2 would not be restored.
