Airborne Optical Adjunct Program Threatened with Cancellation

WASHINGTON A key Strategic Defense Initiative program to develop a complex airborne sensor platform faces cancellation unless technical difficulties are resolved by February. This is the benchmark recently set by SDI Director Lt. Gen. George Monahan for a decision on whether to terminate the Airborne Optical Adjunct (AOA) program.

B-2 Flies with Gear Retracted on Shortened Second Flight

EDWARDS AFB, CALIF. The Air Force/Northrop B-2 bomber flew with its landing gear retracted before the second flight here was cut short by indications of a minor malfunction. Besides retracting the landing gear, the crew also closed engine auxiliary inlet doors on top of the nacelles for the first time on the Aug. 16 flight.

Japanese to Begin Developing Afterburning Version of F-3 Engine

TOKYO The Japanese Defense Agency’s Technical Research and Development Institute plans to begin development next year of an afterburning version of the F-3 engine for an advanced trainer aircraft. A nonafterburning version of the F-330 engine, developed by IshikawajimaHarima Heavy Industries (IHI) in conjunction with the institute, now powers the Kawasaki T-4 intermediate trainer.
