Air Bases, Stations Targeted for Closure as U. S. Reduces Military Manpower 25%

WASHINGTON Citing a major decline in military forces, Defense Secretary Richard B. Cheney has recommended closing defense facilities that include three U. S. Navy and Marine Corps air stations and 14 Air Force bases. “By 1995, the number of people in the U. S. military will be about one-fourth smaller than it is today,” Cheney said.

Declassified Photos Show 'have Blue’ F-117a Predecessor

Los ANGELES The “Have Blue” predecessor of the Air Force/Lockheed F-117A stealth attack aircraft was recently declassified, and AVIATION WEEK & SPACE TECHNOLOGY has obtained these photographs of the formerly top secret prototype. Have Blue successfully demonstrated that a very low radar observable aircraft was possible in the late 1970s, and led directly to development of the F-117A (AW&ST Apr. 9, 1990, p. 36).

Europe’s Tiger Attack Helicopter Relies Heavily on Composite Design

BONN Evidence of its composite design is shown in the first prototype of Eurocopter’s Tiger attack helicopter, which is now at Marignane, France, for flight testing. Eurocopter, the consortium of helicopter divisions of Germany’s Messerschmitt-Boelkow-Blohm and France’s Aerospatiale, will produce 427 Tigers in antitank, air-to-air and ground support roles.
