Navy’s cruise missiles project office, proposing to put its latest Tomahawk missile improvements into production, is considering further upgrades despite unfavorable economic and political prospects. OBERPFAFFENHOFEN, GERMANY Dornier Aircraft GmbH, officials expect the company’s 328 regional transport will meet its performance goals, based on initial flight tests results. Flight testing of the 30-33-seat 328 continued into the holiday period after its initial flight of nearly 2 hr. on Dec. 6 (AW&ST Dec. 16/23, 1991, p. 15).

Dornier Studies Stretched 328 To Follow Regional Market Trends

OBERPFAFFENHOFEN, GERMANY Even as Dornier Aircraft begins flight tests of its new 30-33-seat Dornier 328, the German company’s analysts believe the regional transport market will demand larger turboprops by the end of the century. As a result, Dornier has a stretched version of the 328 under study, but company officials are expected to decide this year whether to build it and at what size.

Dornier Tunes Propellers, Engines And Fuselage to Cut Noise Levels

FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, GERMANY By using a combination of aerodynamics, propeller design, dampening and a tuned fuselage, Dornier Aircraft expects 75% of passengers in its new 328 turboprop will be subjected to no more than 78 dB. of noise. Dornier officials emphasize the aircraft will exceed Stage 3 airport noise standards and have reduced interior cabin noise.

FAA Urged to Fix Loran C Problems Before Approving IFR Approaches

WASHINGTON Serious deficiencies in the existing Loran C navigation system must be resolved by the FAA and industry before unrestricted instrument approach operations can be safely authorized, according to Bendix/King. In a report released last month, the Olathe, Kan.-based avionics manufacturer cited unreliable signal availability, faulty approach chart design and human factors problems as chief drawbacks of the system.
