Russians Completing New Ground-Effect Vehicle

WASHINGTON Russia's Central Hydrofoil Design Bureau is completing a large new wingin-ground effect (WIG) vehicle and is seeking Western backing for this and smaller aircraft that fly on a cushion of air at low altitudes. The aircraft, in final assembly at Nizhni Novgorod, is one of the design bureau's biggest WIG vehicles and originally was intended for the Russian navy.

SOUTH OF SANTA CRUZ ISLAND, CALIF. The Lockheed Sea Shadow stealth ship unveiled this month was built upon several smaller craft that had the same faceted twin-hull configuration. The predecessor craft were also constructed by Lockheed and secretly tested in the ocean.

McDonnell Douglas Posts Record First-Quarter Earnings

NEW YORK Sizable first-quarter earnings gains appear to be the rule among U. S. aerospace companies—most notably McDonnell Douglas Corp., which posted its highest-ever net earnings for any firstquarter period. Excluding unusual gains, the St. Louisbased aerospace and defense contractor had net earnings on continuing operations of $94 million, or $2.41 per share.

Light Utility Mission May Move to Army Guard

WASHINGTON U. S. Army leaders may turn the light utility helicopter role over to the National Guard in order to maintain funding for its next-generation RAH-66 Comanche light scout/attack helicopter. "I feel strongly that the reserves, the National Guard specifically, should have that [light utility] mission,” Maj. Gen. DeWitt Irby, Jr., the Army's aviation program executive officer, said.

Pentagon Reports Clear Way for Release of Aircraft Funds

WASHINGTON The Pentagon has delivered reports to Congress on tactical aircraft and helicopter modernization, clearing the way for contractors to continue to receive funding on several major defense programs. Congress had restricted the Pentagon from spending more than 65% of the total funds appropriated for Fiscal 1993 for three major Army helicopter programs—AH-64C modernization, AH-64 Longbow and RAH-66 Comanche—and three tactical aircraft programs—the F22, F/A-l8E/F and the A/F-X.

Vought Shifts Production Site of JPATS Candidate to Texas

WASHINGTON Vought Aircraft Co. will fully build the Pampa 2000 in Texas if the company wins the competition for the Air Force/ Navy Joint Primary Aircraft Training System. The Dallas-based company had originally intended to have Argentina's Fabrica Militar de Aviones (FMA) build many of the Pampa parts, with final assembly and testing done in the U. S.
