BALL DROPS PEGASUS PLAN, SELECTS LOCKHEED LAUNCHER

WASHINGTON Ball Corp. has dropped its plan to use Orbital Sciences Corp.'s Pegasus XL booster to orbit a U. S. Navy satellite early in 1996, opting instead for the yet-to-fly Lockheed LLV1 launch vehicle. Although the Geosat Follow-On (GFO) will not be the first payload to fly on the new family of solid-fuel boosters, Ball is the first customer to sign for a launch, according to Don Damon, Lockheed Missiles and Space Co.'s LLV program, manager.
