RENEWED BACKING FOR JAPAN'S HOPE

TOKYO Japanese space planners have reaffirmed their commitment to the space shuttle concept in a report calling for development funding for the Hope unmanned space shuttle in the fiscal 1994 budget. No funding target has been set by Japan's Science and Technology Agency for the budget for the initial winged Hope vehicle, but the agency expects a demonstrator program and accompanying experiments to cost about 15 billion yen (about $1.41 billion), including launch costs.

RUSSIAN MIG-29s COLLIDE AT BRITISH AIR SHOW

RAF FAIRFORD, ENGLAND Two Russian pilots ejected safely after their Mikoyan MiG-29 fighters collided while flying formation aerobatics during the International Air Tattoo 93 at RAF Fairford. The civilian pilots, Sergey Tresvyatsky and Alexander Beschastnov, suffered only minor injuries, and none of the tens of thousands of spectators was hurt.

U. S. FREES FUNDS FOR UKRAINE

WASHINGTON The U. S. is releasing $175 million in funds authorized by Congress to assist Ukraine in disarming its nuclear weapon stockpiles following Kiev's move to start dismantling SS-19 ballistic missiles. The decision followed a July 27 meeting between Defense Secretary Les Aspin and Ukrainian Defense Minister Konstantin Morozov here.
