U.S.-RUSSIAN TEAMS GET PENTAGON FUNDS

WASHINGTON The U.S. Defense Dept, has completed the first round of contract awards for a fast-paced Russian defense conversion effort, while a parallel program is in difficulty because of U.S. military budget constraints. The contracts already awarded provide $16.8 million in government money for joint efforts between U.S. companies and four major Russian aerospace organizations.

SEAL PROBLEM TRIGGERS GE ENGINE MODIFICATION

NEW YORK USAF will accelerate replacement of turbine seals in General Electric-powered F-16s following recent uncontained failures in two aircraft operated by Israel and Egypt. Although those accidents are still under investigation, the Air Force accelerated the seal replacement because the failures may be linked to well-known 3-2 turbine seal problems in the General Electric F110, F101 and F118 engines.

PEGASUS LOFTS APEX

LOS ANGELES Orbital Sciences Corp. has successfully launched a standard Pegasus booster carrying an Advanced Photovoltaic and Electronic Experiments (APEX) spacecraft, which OSC developed for the U.S. Air Force. The Aug. 3 launch from a NASA B-52 off the California coast was the first of a Pegasus since the failure June 27 of the initial Pegasus XL, a stretched version of the standard booster (AW&ST July 4, p. 30).
