NEW YORK Resolution of a persistent vibratory problem in the F-22 fighter's F119 powerplant has cleared the way for the propulsion program to transition out of its early diagnostic phase and into product development. The vibratory problem—caused by shockwaves reflected onto high pressure turbine blades from stationary, low pressure turbine vanes—will be fixed in production engines by substituting a recontoured vane and increasing the number of vanes.

TRW, TELEGLOBE PROPOSE ODYSSEY SATCOM SYSTEM

LOS ANGELES TRW and the Canadian telecommunications company Teleglobe are planning a partnership that will put TRW's Odyssey personal communications system in operation by the end of 1998. Odyssey is to have a 12-satellite constellation in medium-altitude orbits, compared to the 48 and 66-satellite low Earth orbit constellations of its competitors, Loral's Globalstar and Motorola's Iridium respectively (AW&ST Apr. 4, p. 57).
