Team Formed for X-33 Bid

WASHINGION McDonnell Douglas and Boeing, joining forces to compete for X-33 work with NASA, will apply their space booster and commercial transport expertise in a bid to lead U.S. development of a low-cost, reusable launch vehicle. The teaming might well be expanded into an overall merger of Boeing and McDonnell Douglas space activities, several industry officials speculated.

Atlas Boosts Orion Satellite

CAPE CANAVERAL AIR STATION Officials of Orion Atlantic are preparing for an expansion of their $340-million satellite communications network following the launch of their first dedicated spacecraft from here last week. The Martin Marietta Atlas 2A carrying the Orion 1 satellite lifted off from Pad 36A here at 10:21 a.m. GMT, Nov. 29, starting a 13-sec. roll to a 95.8-deg. flight azimuth 2 sec. after launch.

Cnes Proposes New Small Spacecraft

PARIS The French national space agency CNES is seeking government approval to develop a series of small spacecraft to broaden science mission opportunities at lower cost. If the new mission series is approved in 1995, France would invite other European countries or the U.S. to cooperate in the program that would get underway by the year 2000.
