ROCKWELL TO BUILD CBU KITS FOR B-l B

LOS ANGELES The U.S. Air Force has given Rockwell the go-ahead to begin production of kits that will enable B-l B aircraft to drop cluster bomb units (CBUs) as the service continues to expand the bomber's conventional munitions role. The production approval, received May 15, follows a flight test program at Edwards AFB, Calif., using a single B-l B with modified conventional bomb modules in each of its three weapon bays.

GPS TAIL KIT IMPROVES MK. 82 ACCURACY

WASHINGTON Rockwell's North American Aircraft Div. has successfully demonstrated integration of a GPS-guided tail kit for Mk. 82 500-lb. bombs on a U.S. Air Force B-1B bomber. The new delivery system incorporates a modified tail kit capable of receiving Global Positioning System (GPS) targeting data and aerodynamic controls to guide the bomb.

PIPER CREDITORS TO VOTE ON REORGANIZATION PLAN

MELBOURNE, FLA. Creditors will begin voting this week on a plan to end Piper Aircraft Corp.'s four-year bankruptcy this summer by selling the manufacturer to a partnership of a major creditor and a Philadelphia investment firm. The Vero Beach, Fla.-based company started mailing ballots to about 1,000 creditors May 19, seeking their support of its plan to reorganize under Chapter 1 1 of U.S. bankrupt1 cy law.

UPPSALA, SWEDEN The Swedish air force is preparing to reduce expenditures by nearly 15% for 18 months, beginning July 1. The cut will require a temporary reduction of flight hours by about 10%. The spending cuts—which affect all Swedish armed services—have been imposed because of the depreciation of the Swedish krona, the general state of Sweden's economy, and a change in the nation's fiscal year from July 1-June 30 to a calendar year beginning in 1997.
