LE BOURGET A six-nation international consortium led by Sikorsky Aircraft has launched a $600-million program to develop the 19passenger S-92 Helibus, a commercially certified, medium-lift helicopter scheduled to begin flight tests in early 1998.

MISSION OF TIER 3-REFLECTED IN DESIGN

PALMDALE, CALIF. The recently unveiled Tier 3reconnaissance drone shows the application of stealth principles to a different mission than flown by current manned stealth aircraft. Aircraft such as the Lockheed Martin F-l17 and F-22 or Northrop Grumman B-2 bomber are designed to be particularly hard to see on radar when flying toward and away from defended targets, and have swept planforms that deflect radar from forward and rear aspects by having the high reflectivity "spikes" angled to the side.

BOMBARDIER LAUNCHES DASH 8-400, PLANS STRETCHED REGIONAL JET

LE BOURGET Bombardier has launched production of the 70-seat de Havilland Dash 8 Series 400 turboprop aircraft and is likely go ahead with a 70-seat stretch of the Canadair Regional Jet—now called the CRJ-X—next year. Robert Brown, president of Bombardier Aerospace Group-North America, said the company has confidence that the two types of aircraft are complementary and that regional airline growth will continue to outstrip major airline growth in the key North American and European markets.

AIRBORNE EXPANDS HUB, PLANS FLEET UPGRADES

WILMINGTON, OHIO In a period of hard competition for air couriers, Airborne Express is completing a $60-million expansion in this Corn Belt community and is about to begin a program to replace its Douglas freighters. Airborne, in the package delivery business for 15 years, will open a second, parallel runway, new aprons and taxiways this September.

BOEING TO BUILD 777-300X FOR ASIA/PACIFIC CARRIERS

LE BOURGET Four major Asia/Pacific carriers have paved the way for launch of the stretched version of the Boeing 777 with commitments for 31 of the planned 777-300 aircraft, currently called the 777-300X. The orders— 20 are new and 11 are either conversions or confirmations of earlier orders—are valued at about $3.1 billion.
