NAVY BEGINS TESTING F-14 DIGITAL CONTROLS

BOSTON A U.S. Navy F-14D equipped with a digital flight control system (DFCS) made its first flight at the Patuxent River, Md., test center in a program that will include at least 20 flights and possibly as many as 50. The Navy had originally planned to procure nearly $80 million of these DFCSs for installation on all of the 200 F-l 4A and B models and 51 Ds expected to still be in service by the turn of the century.

NEW YORK. Boeing Sikorsky has begun whirl tests of the RAH-66 Comanche's bearingless main rotor system. The evaluations will examine the rotor's performance, durability and aeromechanical stability before the Comanche's first flight in November.

SMITH/BARSTOW-DAGGETT AIRFIELD, CALIF. The C-17 program has passed a key milestone in its ongoing 30-day evaluation with completion of a simulated wartime surge during which 61 sorties and 465 flight hours were logged over two days, according to Air Force officials.
