NASA/LANGLEY TESTS WAVERIDER DESIGN

WASHINGTON The NASA/Langley Research Center (Larc) is conducting wind tunnel tests of an 0.062-scale waverider model in its 12-ft. Low-Speed Tunnel and the 30 X 60ft. Full-Scale Tunnel facility. Waveriders are hypersonic aircraft that "ride" on their own shockwave and have the potential to fly at speeds up to Mach 6.

PARIS The loss of a French air force Dassault Mirage 2000D fighter to a Serbian surface-to-air missile near Sarajevo Aug. 30 highlights new French moves to enhance the protection of 2000D aircraft operating in the Bosnian theater. The advanced ground attack aircraft was shot down by an inexpensive manportable infra red-guided missile. The crew ejected.

U-2 CRASHES IN ENGLAND

LONDON/LOS A U.S. Air Force U-2 reconnaissance aircraft supporting allied operations over Bosnia crashed after takeofr from RAF Fairford on Aug. 29, just a day before NATO aircraft were unleashed against Serbian targets. The U-2, assigned to the 9th Reconnaissance Wing at Beale AFB, Calif., had been stationed at Fairford since April to support Operation Deny Flight.

PRATT TO STUDY SOYUZ DATA IN DESIGNING JAST NOZZLE

LOS ANGELES The Soyuz Aero Engine Co. will provide vectoring nozzle information for the Lockheed Martin Joint Advanced Strike Technology (JAST) aircraft design under a technical assistance agreement it signed with Pratt & Whitney. Soyuz is the second Russian company to join the short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) aspect of Lockheed Martin's JAST concept.

JR./ NEW YORK Human error in field assembly is believed to have caused the second failure of Orbital Sciences Corp.'s Pegasus XL space launch vehicle in June. Strong evidence suggests that one of three mechanical guides on the secondstage engine nozzle was not properly installed at Vandenberg AFB, where major sections of the vehicle were assembled prior to launch, Orbital chief David W.
