COLUMBIA MISSION PRODUCES MICROGRAVITY ADVANCES

Columbia's seven astronauts wrapped up more than a week of microgravity research and caught a last glimpse of their errant tethered satellite payload before preparing to return to Earth last week. Working in two shifts around the clock, the seven astronauts and researchers on the ground used four major experiments on support trusses in Columbia's payload bay to study the formation of solids and liquids in the near-absence of gravity.

ALLIEDSIGNAL COMMITS TO LT101 IMPROVEMENTS

NEW YORK AlliedSignal Engines will invest some $15 million in the LT101 engine series over the next three years to improve the reliability of the engine and boost customer satisfaction. "We need to ensure that the fleet reliability of the LT101 series is at a level commensurate with the rest of AlliedSignal Engine's products," Robert L. Miller, LT101 program manager, said.

SR-71 TO TEST AEROSPIKE ROCKET FOR X-33 PROPOSAL

LOS ANGELES Lockheed Martin and Rocketdyne are preparing to test a linear aerospike rocket engine on a NASA SR-71, as part of their bid for the NASA X-33 reusable launcher program. The Rocketdyne engine is mounted at the aft end of a half-model of an X-33 concept, and is shown here being fitted to NASA's SR-71A, tail number 844.

BAe TO UPGRADE TORNADO F3s

LONDON British Aerospace has gotten the nod to upgrade 100 Royal Air Force Tornado F3s from the Ministry of Defense which dropped an alternative plan to lease used U.S. F-16s. The work, worth 125 million pounds ($192.5 million), will include making the fighter capable of carrying four advanced medium range and four advanced short range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAM and ASRAAM).
