NASA Nears X-33 Pick

WASHINGTON NASA is nearing selection of a design for an “X-33” test vehicle that it hopes will lead to development of a radically cheaper launcher—and possible successor to the space shuttle. The U.S. space agency is set to choose by July 1 an industry partner that will receive an estimated $900 million under a three-year cooperative agreement to build the X-33.

No Money as Yet in Airbus Jumbo Plan

TOULOUSE, FRANCE Airbus Industrie tentatively plans to launch the 550-630-seat A3XX ultra-high-capacity long-range transport in 1999 and to deliver the first production aircraft four years later. Airbus officials here expressed a strong commitment to launching the $8-billion program within three years, but the mechanism for financing the development effort has not been spelled out yet.

DC-XA Demonstrates One-Day Turnaround

LOS ANGELES After two warmup flights since its conversion from the DC-X, the McDonnell Douglas DC-XA experimental rocket has started expanding the flight envelope again. The DC-XA made its second and third flights on June 7 and 8, the fastest turnaround yet of the liquid hydrogen/oxygen-powered vehicle, showing high utilization rates that could improve the economics of a full-scale launcher.

Meteor Takes on Amraam Derivative

LINKOPING, SWEDEN Europe’s top missile makers are offering a ramjet-powered, radar-guided weapon to meet the U.K.’s requirement for a future medium-range air-to-air missile (FMRAAM) for the Eurofighter 2000. The Meteor is also designed to equip the Swedish air force JAS 39 Gripen and is based largely on the S225XR design, which emerged from concept studies done by British Aerospace, Saab, Alenia and GEC-Marconi over the past three years.

WASHINGTON Orbital Sciences Corp. and Rockwell International pulled the plug on development of the X-34 reusable winged booster earlier this year when they backed out of a cooperative agreement with NASA. But officials at the U.S. space agency apparently do not carry a grudge.

Fokker Gets Another ‘last Chance’

Paris Fokker is scheduled to produce additional transport aircraft, an initiative expected to further extend the life of the bankrupt company. The Court of Amsterdam has approved a plan involving the production of 15 additional aircraft by the bankrupt manufacturer, a move expected to generate more cash and to give rise to an ultimate opportunity to save the company.
