NRO Says Smallsats Are Now Its Future

WASHINGTON National Reconnaissance Office managers have dropped opposition to downsizing their spacecraft in the wake of a high-level panel’s conclusion that future U.S. intelligence satellites should be dramatically smaller. Director of Central Intelligence John Deutch’s advisory panel said the NRO should break up the multiple tasks performed by the agency’s expensive, highly capable satellites.

Pegasus Lofts TOMS-EP

Los Angeles The Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer Earth Probe (TOMS-EP) is expected to begin transmitting environmental data to NASA scientists by the end of the month following successful launch on a Pegasus XL booster. The 650-lb. satellite, developed by TRW Space & Electronics Group, was launched July 2 at about 12:46 a.m. PDT approximately 60 mi. off the coast of California.
