In the next 10 years, Italian space spending will gradually increase to nearly $1 billion per year, up from about $625 million in 1996.

Galileo Team Wrestles To Keep Second Flyby

LOS ANGELES The Galileo orbiter went into a “safe” mode on Aug. 24 because of a computer error, and engineers were hoping to have full operation restored by Sept. 1, when the science sequence for the second Ganymede flyby is set to start. Controllers began sending commands on Aug. 28, and the spacecraft and its computer were operating normally again on Aug. 29.

MELBOURNE, FLA. FBI agents are looking for carpet sections, seat cushions and other debris from Trans World Airlines Flight 800 that likely captured important clues to the source of the blast that destroyed the aircraft. The piles of carpeting and seats already retrieved from the ocean floor will prove key to determining if an explosive device downed the aircraft, according to bomb specialists, particularly if the device was hidden in the 747-131’s cabin.
