Saab to Cease Production Of Regional Turboprops

WASHINGTON PARIS In a further consolidation of the regional aircraft manufacturing industry, Saab Aircraft will end production of its two regional turboprops—the 30-37-seat Saab 340 and 50-seat Saab 2000— by mid-1999. The Swedish company said it will focus on providing customer support and spare parts throughout the lifespan of the existing Saab fleet—which will number more than 500 next year—and on its growing role as a contractor for other aircraft manufacturers and as a potential partner in collaborative programs.

Lockheed Martin Deal Enters Crucial Phase

New York Lockheed Martin’s proposed acquisition of Northrop Grumman is expected to close in February, although the Justice Dept, views radar and electronic warfare systems businesses as sources of potential antitrust problems. If the $11.6-billion transaction is approved as originally proposed, some industry executives believe Lockheed Martin would obtain a virtual lock on certain niche markets.
