Paris DaimlerChrysler Aerospace will become the biggest shareholder in Spacehab in what is expected to be the first of a series of steps to increase the German company’s presence in non-European markets, particularly the U.S. The agreement by DASA last week to purchase a $12-million equity stake in Spacehab—one of the biggest U.S. players in the commercial space business— will give the German-based manufacturer an 11% shareholding, making it the largest single shareholder in the company.

Washington The U.S. Air Force wants to develop electronic warfare equipment that could protect satellites because of a growing fear among commanders that assets in space will come under attack in future conflicts. The vulnerability of U.S. satellites is increasingly of concern to Defense Dept. officials, particularly as they see the proliferation of technology that can be used for antisatellite warfare.
