LOS ANGELES Takeoff performance of the Concorde was fully certified by British and French civil aviation authorities in 1975 to the normal rules that applied to four-engine transports. That means the aircraft should tolerate an engine failure during the critical part of the takeoff roll.

The Experimental Aircraft Assn.’s AirVenture 2000 held here last week showcased a bevy of new, advanced designs bristling with technologies spawned by close cooperation between NASA and the general aviation industry. EAA’s annual event, hailed as the world’s largest air show and exhibition of small aircraft, also underscored the industry’s vibrant health that has seen record sales of both kit and production aircraft as well as a surge in availability of sophisticated electronics and avionics systems.

Concorde Tire Blowout Concerns Date Back to Late ’70s

NEW YORK The crash of Air France Flight 4590 was the first fatal accident involving the Concorde, which has been in service since 1976. The supersonic aircraft, however, has been involved in several incidents in its 20-year-plus history, including a series of tire blowouts on takeoff that led to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) making operating procedure recommendations to French aviation authorities.

'Speedbird' Grounded Until Crack Evaluated

New York British Airways last week temporarily grounded its Concorde “Alpha Echo” after an ultrasonic check detected a growing crack in the the left rear wing spar. Cracks averaging 60 mm. long were discovered several months ago in all seven British Airways’ Concordes in the same wing area outboard the engines during standard ultrasonic testing, according to an airline spokesperson.
