Second Independent Panel Calls For More Space Shuttle Upgrades

WASHINGTON A second NASA advisory panel, this one headed by former Lockheed Martin Executive Vice President Thomas Young, has urged NASA to recognize that the space shuttle fleet probably will fly well after its current 2012 retirement date and should be upgraded accordingly for safety even if it costs more than the $1.6 billion currently budgeted for shuttle upgrades.

X-40A Begins Flight Tests Targeting Next-Generation RLV

LOS ANGELES Another step toward development of a reusable launch vehicle has been taken with the first of a series of seven planned free-flights of the X-40A, which was completed at Edwards AFB, Calif., according to program officials. The unpiloted X-40A was originally developed by Boeing as a precursor to the U.S. Air Force’s Space Maneuver Vehicle (SMV) program, but is now serving as a pathfinder to evaluate systems for the approach and landing phase of NASAs X-37.
