WASHINGTON Voyager 1, the man-made object that has put the most distance between itself and Earth, may have picked up the first faint rumblings of interstellar space as it hurtles toward the edge of the Solar System. Scientists who monitor the 26-year-old spacecraft's surviving instruments every day detected a dramatic increase in radiation late last year that abruptly halted in February, suggesting that Voyager 1 may have pushed into the “termination shock" zone where the solar wind slows dramatically.
