Electrifying future large commercial aircraft will require new wiring systems that can distribute tens of megawatts of power at thousands of volts safely and reliably at high altitudes. To pave the way to such a future, the U.S. Energy Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) has awarded contracts totaling $10 million to develop wiring, insulating, cooling and connecting technologies to enable lightweight megawatt-scale power distribution.
