WASHINGTON, SIOUX CITY The investigation into the fatal crash landing of a United Airlines DC-10-10 at Sioux City, Iowa, is focusing on the failure of the fan disk of the tail-mounted General Electric CF6-6 engine. Why the disk separated, showering the horizontal stabilizer with shrapnel and severing hydraulic lines, is the critical facet of the probe.

WASHINGTON Four of five original bidders are still in contention for two Defense Dept, awards to demonstrate a short-range (150-300-km.) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for multiservice, multimission use. The program is called JUAV-SR, for Joint Unmanned Aerial Vehicle—Short Range.

BOSTON A former Canadian Supreme Court justice who reviewed the record on the crash of a McDonnell Douglas DC-8 aircraft at Gander, Newfoundland, in 1985 has concluded that the cause of the accident may never be known and that any further inquiry would be fruitless.

U. S. Army Approves Initial Design Phase of Longbow Radar System for Ah-64

WASHINGTON The U. S. Army has approved a 14month “initial design phase” for its Longbow program, an attempt to give the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter a radar targeting system and a fire-and-forget missile. The service will not commit itself to full-scale development of the system until next May, however.

SIOUX CITY Firefighting teams and medical workers had about 35 min. to get into position before a United Airlines DC-10 crashed at the Sioux Gateway Airport and were able to reach survivors immediately to begin evacuation to local hospitals.
