House Group Asks Slash in Plane Funds

House Appropriations Committee last week proposed slicing $4.3 billion from the overall 1953 defense budget. This would whittle $560 million from USAF and $150 million from Navy funds allocated for purchase of aircraft and related equipment.

The familiar story of lower net income in spite of vastly increased sales is repeated in the case of Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp., Bethpage, N. Y. In spite of a 64% climb in gross sales last year to $167,581,568, net income after taxes was down to $5,456,246 compared with 1950’s $6,242,064 on gross sales of $102,312,498, Grumman reports.

Pratt & Whitnev Aircraft last week confirmed an earlier USAF announcement (AVIATION WEEK Feb. 4, p. 15) that a licensing agreement is being negotiated for Ford Motor Co. to build the new Pratt & Whitney-designed J57 jet engine at the Chicago Ford Aircraft Engine division plant.

PAL Considers Convair 340s

Pioneer Air Lines, which recently purchased nine Martin 2-0-2s from Northwest Airlines for $4.2 million to replace its DC-3 fleet, reportedly is interested in buying five brand new Convair-Liner 340s for delivery in 1954. PAL carried nearly 162,000 passengers over its 1,934 route miles in 1951, expects to fly 200,000 this year and thinks traffic by 1954 will require the additional planes.

AA Revives Its Airborne Radar Plans

Commercial jet aircraft will have to carry airborne radar, says M. G. Beard, chief engineer of American Airlines. Not only will radar improve the safety factor, but it will enable transports to avoid unfavorable weather. Jet transports will not be able to barrel into thunderstorms at 600 mph, flinging passengers and baggage around the cabin.
