Pressure Forces Af Action on Spares

Under congressional pressure to reduce spending on spare parts, engines and equipment, the Air Force has set up a committee at Wright-Patterson AFB to recommend appropriate action. Headed by Harry King of Bridgeport, Conn., president of Munson Line, Inc., the committee expects to make recommendations continuously to reduce USAF’s current year program for spares procurement and to make final recommendations re-working the basic system by the first of the year.

Military Air Transport Service last week disclosed it has been operating a large-scale Acrtic airlift to help build and supply the top-of-the-world air base which USAF has established in Danish-owned Greenland, some 530 mi. northeast of the magnetic North Pole, 930 mi. from the true North Pole.

Pilots Face New Test on City Ordinance

Air Line Pilots Assn, last week called for Civil Aeronautics Administration cooperation in seeking a better understanding of local airport problems and their relation to the overall interstate commerce picture at El Paso, Tex. The appeal, in a letter from ALPA President Clarence L. Sayen to CAA Administrator Charles F. Horne, followed announcement that El Paso city council had passed a local ordinance regulating operational procedure of airline planes at the international airport there.

AMC Rejects Plan to Speed Award Data

Dayton—Efforts to speed reporting of information on negotiated contract awards ran into a snag here when Air Materiel Command declined to accept a proposed new method offered by manufacturers’ representatives. AMC indicated, however, that attempts will be made to reduce the time between the award and the announcement.

Gm Consolidates Engine, Prop Units

Consolidation of General Motors Corp.’s Aeroproducts division at Dayton with the Allison division at Indianapolis was announced last week by C. E. Wilson, General Motors president. The Aeroproducts division, which manufactures hydraulically controlled propellers, actuators and other aviation products, will be consolidated as a fifth activity group under the Allison organization, along with aircraft engines, tank engine transmissions, bearings and locomotive parts, all under leadership of E. B. Newill, Allison general manager and vice president of General Motors.
