Europe Begins Joint Effort Into Space

Geneva—European space programs on national and international levels will begin to yield results this year, but major dividends on the growing investment of money and talent are a year or more in the future. British Facing Shifting Defense Policy

London—Britain’s aerospace industry is faced with a general election that could markedly alter United Kingdom defense policy, adding to its existing dilemma of high productive capacity and employment but few designs to keep it busy in the 1970-80 decade.

Atlantic Carriers Foresee Higher Earnings

New York—Seating capacity offered by 19 scheduled airlines over the North Atlantic is leveling off after five years of rapid growth, bringing prospects of higher load factors and better earnings for some carriers in 1964. The capacity curve is flattening out at about the same time that some airlines are beginning to shed part of the financial burden associated with jet introduction.

by today’s medium-size piston-powered business aircraft, is the formula wanted by corporate executives. The Lear Jet promises to be the fastest corporate jet built. Some indications are that the airplane may be flown at supersonic speed prior to obtaining its FAA certificate, although its placarded speed will be approximately Mach .82 at a 40,000-ft.

Microcircuits Add to Computer Capability

Los Angeles—A new generation of airborne and spaceborne digital computers having greater capability for satisfying expanding military requirements is starting to emerge as a result of the introduction of microcircuitry. The use of microcircuits—which began to make their appearance in prototype hardware more frequently during the past year—is enabling designers to provide smaller, lighter or more capable machines potentially more reliable and less difficult to maintain.
