156-in. Solid Motor Center Segment Casting Completed

Redlands, Calif.—Lockheed Propulsion Co. has completed casting of the center segment of its three-section 156in.-dia. feasibility demonstration motor being prepared for firing in late May or early June. It will be the first motor larger than 120-in. to be fired in the large solid development program which is supported by Air Force and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Burbank, Calif.—A large-area, double-delta wing featuring low wing-loading and lightweight construction is at the core of Lockheed Aircraft Corp.’s CL-823 supersonic transport design. The broad outline of the company’s approach to the supersonic transport design was established by three essential considerations, according to Richard R. Heppe, chief engineer for the Lockheed supersonic transport.
