707 Navaid Stresses Maintenance Ease

Washington—Sperry SGN-10 inertial navigation system, which Pan American World Airways expects to install on its long-range Boeing 707s beginning next summer, will represent a significant number of firsts which could have a major impact on airline avionics (AW&ST July 27, p. 30.) It will be the first operational civil aircraft use of inertial technology pioneered for military aircraft and missiles.

Ft. Worth—Central Airlines has initiated significant changes in equipment and organization aimed at reducing the local service carrier’s dependence on subsidy and increasing its profitability. The equipment modernization program will move Central from piston to turbine power—a transition designed to provide important operating economies, increase reliability and passenger appeal, and permit the airline to boost its air freight capabilities markedly.
